Fentanyl Facts

What is fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50x more potent than heroin and 100x more potent than morphine. It is a major cause of fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States.

Fentanyl is now found in a variety of street drugs, including pills, heroin, and cocaine, and only a trace amount can result in an overdose. The majority of recent fentanyl-related overdoses have been linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl distributed through illegal drug markets.

How do I know if fentanyl is in my drug supply?

Fentanyl may have a different taste, look, or taste than heroin or other drugs. Fentanyl test strips (FTS) can help you to check your supply of illicit fentanyl.

Signs of Fentanyl Overdose

Recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose can help save a life. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or losing consciousness
  • Slow, weak, or no breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Cold and/or clammy skin
  • Discolored skin (especially in lips and nails)
